The shocking story of a mother who killed her children and escaped from arrest to conviction
Mother killed her children
A New Zealand court has convicted South Korean-born Hwakyung Lee of murdering her two young children.
According to a global news agency, the brutal mother deliberately killed her 8- and 6-year-old children by giving them an overdose of medicine in 2018.
After the murder, the accused wrapped the children's bodies in plastic, put them in suitcases and left them in a storage locker.
The accused's husband and the children's father had died of cancer a year before the brutal murder of the children.
The bodies of these two innocent children were discovered in 2022, four years after the murder, when a family bought a storage locker from an online auction.
When the storage was opened, the suitcases contained decomposed human remains. The police were informed.
After the remains of the children were found, New Zealand police began investigating the murder in 2022, but by then the accused had left for their home country.
In November 2022, New Zealand also filed a lawsuit against South Korea for the extradition of the accused.
As a result, the accused, Hakyung Lee, was brought from South Korea and tried in New Zealand.
The accused pleaded guilty in court and pleaded for forgiveness.
Her lawyer also argued in the sentencing hearing that a life sentence would be unfair given the accused’s mental state.
However, the prosecution argued that there was no evidence of the accused’s suicide or severe mental imbalance at the time of the murder.
Judge Geoffrey Wenning rejected the request for a reduced sentence, saying that you knew that your crime was morally wrong.
The judge added that you may not have been able to bear your children as a reminder of your previously happy life.
The court sentenced the accused to life imprisonment, which includes a minimum of 17 years of unconditional imprisonment.
It should be remembered that the death penalty has been abolished in New Zealand since 1989, since which life imprisonment has been the harshest punishment.
The court also ordered that the accused be first provided treatment in a psychiatric center and be sent back to prison after recovery.
