Russia threatens to completely ban WhatsApp


Russia’s state communications watchdog Roskomnadzor has threatened to completely block the instant messaging application WhatsApp

The news agency said that if WhatsApp does not comply with Russian laws, the application will be completely banned.

The decision by Russian authorities is the latest in a series of restrictions imposed on WhatsApp and Telegram calls in August. Authorities accused the platforms (including Meta) of failing to share information with law enforcement agencies in cases of fraud and terrorism.

On Friday, Roskomnadzor repeated its accusations that WhatsApp had failed to comply with regulations designed to combat and prevent crime.
