Summary signed, Field Marshal Asim Munir approved as first Chief of Defence Forces
President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the summary of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff and first Chief of Defence Forces of Pakistan, sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after his approval.
President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the summary submitted by the Prime Minister, under which Field Marshal Asim Munir, who is currently Chief of Army Staff, has been approved as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) for a period of five years.
The President also approved an additional two-year term of service to the Chief of Air Staff, which will be effective from March 19, 2026, after the end of his current term.
The President expressed his best wishes to both the Army Chief (who will now also be the CDF) and the Chief of Air Staff for their future responsibilities.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had signed the summary of Field Marshal Asim Munir’s appointment as Army Chief and Chief of Defence Forces and sent it to the President for approval.

According to the Prime Minister’s summary, Field Marshal Asim Munir will be the Chief of Army Staff as well as the Chief of Defence Forces and this appointment will be for a period of 5 years.
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will be the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also approved a two-year extension in the tenure of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, and this extension will be applicable on the completion of his current 5-year tenure in March 2026.
