Tajikistan considers deploying Russian troops to guard border with Afghanistan after deaths of Chinese citizens
Tajikistan has begun talks with Russia on deploying Russian troops for joint patrols on its border with Afghanistan.
Citing sources, the foreign news agency said that Tajikistan is in talks with Russia and the Russian-led regional security alliance for joint patrols on the border with Afghanistan so that the Russian army can be deployed for joint patrols on the unstable border with Afghanistan.
It should be noted that over the past week, five Chinese citizens have been killed and five injured in the border area with Tajikistan as a result of attacks by Afghanistan.
According to the news agency, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon held an emergency consultation with the heads of security agencies on Monday.
Sources in the Tajik Security Council told the news agency that authorities have discussed with Russia the possibility of sending troops from a Russian military base in Tajikistan to jointly monitor the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
This military base is Russia's largest foreign military installation in Tajikistan and is located near the capital, Dushanbe.
According to sources, negotiations are underway in this regard and a decision is likely to be made this week.
If the negotiations are successful, Russia will provide helicopters to monitor the 1,344-kilometer border with Afghanistan, the sources told the news agency.
