Greenland dispute: Trump open threat of heavy tariffs to European countries
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose import tariffs on countries that oppose the proposed US control over Greenland.
President Trump has said that additional tariffs will be imposed on Denmark and its European allies from next month to increase pressure on the Greenland issue.
President Trump said in a statement on his social media platform Truth Social that the US will impose a 10% import tariff on Denmark and its allies from February, which will later be increased to 25% from June. According to him, this move is part of a pressure strategy to acquire Greenland.
The US president said that the US has provided trade facilities and subsidies to Denmark and European countries for decades, even centuries, but has never received adequate compensation in return. According to Trump, now is the time for Denmark to make amends, because world peace and security are at stake.
President Trump clarified that the proposed tariff would apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland and would remain in place until a final agreement is reached on the purchase of Greenland.
He added that the United States has been trying to buy Greenland for the past 150 years, but Denmark has consistently refused. According to Trump, Greenland’s geographical importance has now increased due to the modern defense system and the “Golden Dome” project.
This statement comes at a time when demands for American control over Greenland are increasing and Denmark has increased its military presence on the island and its surroundings. In recent days, military forces from France, Sweden and other European countries have also arrived in Greenland for joint exercises led by Denmark.
